Sheffield ranked as one of the top universities in the World

The University of Sheffield has been named as one of the world’s top universities in two separate global rankings published recently. In  the annual academic ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide, published  by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sheffield was ranked 69th in the world, whilst the US publication Newsweek ranked the University 70th in its global top 100 hundred listings. Open for Business; Universities in Yorkshire help create over 100 new businesses

A partnership of Universities in Yorkshire are celebrating their role in the creation of over 100 new businesses and 160 new jobs for the region.
The Centre for Graduate Entrepreneurship in Yorkshire (CGEY), led by Leeds Metropolitan University was created with funding under the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF2) in August 2004 bringing together 7 regional Universities (Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, Sheffield Hallam and Trinity and All Saints College). Tasked with developing entrepreneurial skills, creating new start ups and encouraging graduate retention within the region, the CGEY has developed a programme of jointly planned activities and provides a forum for the sharing of ideas and best practice.Read more...
 
Sheffield Hallam's Vice-Chancellor appointed Chair of Yorkshire Universities

Sheffield Hallam’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Diana Green has been appointed the new Chair of Yorkshire Universities.
Michael Noble, Chief Executive said "I am very pleased to welcome Diana Green to the post of Chair of Yorkshire Universities. She brings to the role a wealth of experience within the region, nationally and beyond, which will be enormous benefit to the on-going development of the HE sector's contribution to the Yorkshire & the Humber region."

Principal says goodbye to Trinity & All Saints

After 30 years in Education, eight of them as Principal and Chief Executive at Trinity & All Saints in Horsforth, Leeds, Dr Mike Coughlan retires in August 2006. The retirement was marked by governors at a lunch on 10th July and at a staff reception on 26th July, when the former Bishop of Leeds, Bishop David Konstant, thanked him and presented him with some state-of-the-art fishing gear with which to fill his retirement! York St John - Britain's Newest University

165 Years after its foundation as a higher education institution, York St John University College has received official approval from the Privy Council of the UK to become York St John University. 
Michael Noble, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Universities, said, “On behalf of all of the higher education institutions in the Yorkshire & Humber region, I warmly congratulate York St John on achieving university status.  York St John has already been an active member of Yorkshire Universities for several years.  We look forward to continuing development of this relationship with the institution in its new guise.” Read more

 

University of Huddersfield - New Vice-Chancellor Appointed

24th July 2006
Prof Bob Cryan has been appointed the next vice-chancellor of the University of Huddersfield. He will take up the position in his home town in January 2007, after the retirement of the present vice-chancellor, Prof John Tarrant, in December. Prof Cryan said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed vice-chancellor at Huddersfield. Under Prof John Tarrant's leadership, the university has become a highly successful one, with top-quality characteristics. John Tarrant has set very high standards, so I feel particularly privileged to be invited to lead the university through this period of immense change in higher education". Read more

 

Yorkshire Universities' Winner of Winners' Awards

Last night saw the annual Yorkshire Universities Winner of Winners Awards for students and graduates from the region's Higher Education Institutions' Business Plan pitching competitions. Leeds Trinity & All Saints - New Principal Appointed

22nd March 2006
Trinity & All Saints has appointed a new Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Freda Bridge, to lead its educational vision for the future. Succeeding Dr Michael Coughlan in the College’s top post, Dr Bridge joins the College from her current position as Dean of Education and Professional Development at the University of Huddersfield. Trinity & All Saints, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has over 2,500 students and employs more than 300 staff at its Horsforth base near Leeds. Read more

 

Widening the Horizon - Supporting Young People in Care into Higher Education

Funded by Aimhigher (North Yorkshire) the Leeds Metropolitan University ‘Widening the Horizon’ project has worked in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council Social Services Leaving Care Team, the City of York Pathway Team and a group of young people leaving care to provide information, advice and guidance to looked after children and care leavers on how to access higher education opportunities across the region through the production of a tailor-made, specifically targeted, interactive CD ROM. .
